Get the most out of your modelling portfolio shoot...
What are modelling digitals (aka Polaroids)?
Model agencies and clients want to see the real you without any distracting hair/makeup styling so they can see your potential. These unedited images should include:
Headshot (Smiling versus non-smiling)
Profile shot (non-smiling)
3/4 face side shot with or without eyes looking into the camera
Full body front facing shot (smiling versus non-smiling)
Note that fashion agencies typically do not want you to smile in your digitals but commercial agencies will want to see you smile in at least 1 photo.
Be mindful to also capture a few shots of you showing personality such as a silly face or two in case the agency later requests a few of those...but make sure they are cute silly faces and not scary or too off the wall. The silly faces should not be initially sent to the agency when trying to get signed unless requested.
What should I wear for modelling digitals?
Be sure that when you take your digitals/polaroids that you wear an outfit that is flattering to your body.
Many agencies will specify if they wish to see digitals in a swimsuit, regular clothing or both.
Wear solid colours, preferably darks such as blacks, blues and greys. You will also want to stay away from any patterns and logo branded pieces.
Generally, models will wear flattering jeans and a plain t-shirt or tank top to take their digitals or a 2-piece solid colour swimsuit depending on which is requested.
Practice in front of the mirror and in various lighting to see what works best to increase your chances of getting signed or booking a job as a result of the digitals.
Finally, digitals/polaroids can make or break an agency or client choosing you so be sure to also work on a healthy physique, skin and hair to be more marketable prior to you attempting to submit to an agency.
What should I wear for my other looks?
If you’re starting out in modelling, your portfolio needs to demonstrate versatility and variety, showing off your figure and angles.
Images with over the top makeup and styling aren’t going to win you work without getting the basics in your portfolio right first.
We can discuss what themes suit your level of experience during the consultation but popular themes include casual, evening, seasonal trends, smart dress, lingerie, swimwear, accessories, beauty and of course whatever you feel most comfortable in.
If you’re considering buying new clothes for the shoot and returning them afterwards, please just be mindful of makeup getting on your clothes during the shoot.
Can I bring someone else along for support?
Yes, you can bring a maximum of one person with you.
I’m under 18 years old – is this suitable for me?
Yes, we work with children and young models regularly on commercial shoots. You will need to be accompanied by an adult on the shoot if under 18yrs.
Where will the shoot take place?
At our studio in Ancoats, Manchester. There is plenty of available parking or the nearest Tram Stop is New Islington which is a 5min walk.
Can I still shoot during the COVID-19 outbreak?
Yes, please see our COVID-19 information page. Upon booking a shoot, we will share our studio shoot policy with you that all models and visitors will need to adhere to.
How should I prepare for the shoot?
Whether the aim of your shoot is just to have some fun, or get a specific look or go for a type of modelling work, we discuss looks and ideas prior to the shoot (usually over email and then briefly before the shoot), this way we can maximise the time you have in the studio.
What should I bring to the shoot?
At the shoot you’ll need to bring your own outfits and accessories. We recommend not wearing any makeup, have your hair free of any products and if shooting lingerie/nude avoid wearing tight fitting clothes that may leave marks on your skin. We have a large Bluetooth speaker at the studio too so feel free to bring your own tunes!
How do I receive the images?
After the shoot we will provide link to a password-protected gallery via email within 1-2 working days with all your images and a separate gallery with the photographer’s choices.
You can then choose which images you would like to have retouched or purchase prints for via our Pro Gallery system.
Your edited hi-res images will be provided via digital download within 2-3 working days from order.
Can I get a copy of all the hi-res images taken?
Yes. A USB memory stick with all the unedited hi-res images can be purchased for £75.
How do I book and pay for the shoot?
We require a £50 deposit to book a session (book online) and the remainder must be paid in full with cash on the day of the shoot.
