Developing your portfolio
Advice for new models
Study model agency requirements
Do your research. Before you book a shoot with anyone, research legitimate agencies that can prove their models are regularly getting paid work. Carefully read their application processes and make sure that you fit their requirements. According to Boss Model management, girls should be between 5’8 – 5’11 and boys between 6’ – 6’3 – there are very few variations. Personality, enthusiasm, determination and a willingness to work hard is essential.
Get the basics right first time
All agencies want to see ‘digitals’ (aka polariods) without makeup and simple clothing. Many may think this is easy to do yourself but with professional lighting, styling and careful image selection the differences can be tremendous. You might only get one shot at each agency you approach so give yourself the best opportunity using professional images.
Convey your personality
Fashion agencies will often not use images of the model smiling but commercial agencies want to see different sides of your personality. Don’t be afraid to have a bit of fun with the shoot and show your silly side too.
Create images with commercial appeal
Your portfolio should show diversity and creativity but don’t forget the basics and always include full length and headshot pictures.
If you’re considering modelling for a career then having a professional looking portfolio of images and some experience in front of a camera in a professional working environment will benefit you greatly and give you an advantage over others.
Whether you’re aiming to approach agencies, go freelance or have just started out with an agency, choosing the right photographer with real-world commercial experience can greatly increase your chances of success.
A short consultation will discover the level that you’re at, brief you on what to expect and together we’ll create a shoot plan that will result in a fun experience and beautiful images to kick start your portfolio.
Advice for existing models
Think about how you want to develop your career
What’s missing from your book? What jobs are you not getting? Does your current portfolio represent who you are now? These are all important things to consider when updating your portfolio and maximise the opportunity to create something new.
Get creative and experiment
If you feel like you’re stuck in a rut with your regular e-comm clients, this is your opportunity to have some fun and create some more editorial style images.
Be bold to stand out
Be brave, be edgy, push your limits. Re-invent yourself.
Feel the need to express your creativity? Perhaps you’ve updated your look recently or want to get more editorial work? An update to your portfolio could be just what you need to boost your confidence and go for more ambitious projects.
In a short consultation we’ll review your existing portfolio, we’ll discuss what your objectives are and create a shoot plan to smash your goals.
